Cornelius, N.C. – Today the Thom Tillis for U.S. Senate campaign began airing a new television ad, “Quiet,” which highlights the failures of Sen. Kay Hagan and President Obama to address growing national security threats across the globe.
On January 27, 2014, President Obama called the Islamic State a “jayvee team” and characterized the terrorist group’s actions as part of “local power struggles.”
Just weeks later, on February 11, 2014, Sen. Kay Hagan skipped a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on current and future threats to the national security of the United States. During the hearing, top intelligence officials warned about the threat of the Islamic State, and confirmed the goal of the terrorist organization was to create an Islamic caliphate in the Middle East.
SEN. JOE MANCHIN: “Iraq seems to be facing well-funded militants of Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. How does the threat of resurgence of Al-Qaeda affiliates pose for the regional stability there?” MICHAEL T. FLYNN, DIRECTOR OF DEFENSE INTELLIGENCE AGENCY: “I think it’s an increasing concern that we’re going to have to pay close attention to. Not only inside of Iraq but the whole region. The scale of what they are involved in now. Particularly the Al-Qaeda element in Iraq and the level of direction they’re having. The level of killing they’re doing inside that country is terrible.” (Armed Services Committee, “Global National Security Threats,” 2/11/14)
SEN. LINDSEY GRAHAM: “Whether it’s core Al-Qaeda or affiliate, the goal is the same no matter what the name may be, is to drive the United States out of the Middle East and create an Islamic caliphate throughout the region. Is that the goal of all the organizations?” JAMES CLAPPER, DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE: “Yes.” (Armed Services Committee, “Global National Security Threats,” 2/11/14)
She does not care about
Meanwhile, Sen. Hagan neglected her job on the Armed Services Committee, skipping over half of full hearings in 2014, including the February 11 hearing where intelligence officials warned about the growing strength of ISIS. Over the last two years, Hagan has skipped 27 out of 50 full hearings.
“President Obama failed to take the threat of ISIS seriously at the same time Sen. Kay Hagan stayed quiet and skipped over half of her Armed Services Committee hearings that addressed vital national security issues,” said Thom Tillis. “While I support keeping all options on the table to completely destroy ISIS, the President and Kay Hagan still have no strategy and continue to lead from behind. This election presents the opportunity to reverse course on President Obama’s failed foreign policy and restore America’s standing in the world.”
VO: In January, President Obama referred to the Islamic State as a “jayvee team.”
Days later, the Armed Services Committee holds a hearing on new global threats.
Senator Kay Hagan? Absent.
In fact, Hagan’s missed half the Armed Services Committee hearings this year.
While ISIS grew, Obama kept waiting and Kay Hagan kept quiet.
The price for their failure is danger. To change direction, we have to change our senator.
THOM TILLIS: I’m Thom Tillis, I approve this message.
